In mathematics, an equation involving two
variables (x,y) of the general form y = mx +
b, where m is the slope of the line
represented by the equation and b is the
y-intercept, or the value of y where the line
crosses the y-axis in the Cartesian
coordinate system. Linear equations can be
used to describe the behaviour of buildings,
bridges, trusses, and other static
structures.
